Mojang Wants You To Learn About SOPA

Mojang will be shutting its website down in solidarity with Reditt and Wikipedia and many other sites — basically, the internet will be going on strike. In preparation for the free time we find while these websites are silent, it would be valuable for us to learn more about the SOPA bill, which Notch finds so very interesting. The Reditt community has prepared a thorough examination of the bill. It is highly recommended that you take the time to read the whole article. But for those of you who just don't have the time, we are here to offer you an abridged version of this article.

Basically, the SOPA bill does not remove any copyrighted content, instead of providing provisions that would do this, the bill focuses on “censorship of links to entire domains”. This means that the Attorney General can serve websites like Reditt and Youtube and in order for them to remove links on a domain, they would have to delete everything on the website. This would require a system of automatic censorship, for websites this to continue to work in the future. This would take up a lot of bandwidth. The measure effectively kills the “free and open discussion about whatever” part of the internet that we have come to love so much. .
