Creating a Virtual LAN: Hamachi Setup for Minecraft Servers

Feb. 19, 2022

Local Network

Minecraft, the immensely popular sandbox game, offers an immersive multiplayer experience that allows players to explore, build, and survive together. While Minecraft offers local multiplayer functionality, there may be instances where you want to connect with friends or players outside of your local network. To bridge the gap and create a virtual local area network (LAN), you can utilize a program called Hamachi. In this article, we will guide you through the process of setting up a virtual LAN using Hamachi for Minecraft servers, enabling you to connect and play with friends regardless of physical distance.

Minecraft Server

Understanding Hamachi:

Hamachi is a virtual private network (VPN) software that creates a secure connection between computers over the internet, effectively creating a virtual LAN environment. By simulating a local network, Hamachi allows Minecraft players to connect to each other's servers as if they were on the same network, even if they are located in different parts of the world.

Step 1: Download and Install Hamachi:

Begin by visiting the official Hamachi website and downloading the appropriate version of the software for your operating system. Install Hamachi following the on-screen instructions.

Step 2: Create a Hamachi Network:

Once Hamachi is installed, launch the application and sign in with your LogMeIn ID. If you don't have one, create a new account. After logging in, click on the "Network" menu and select "Create a new network." Provide a name for your network and set a strong password. Share these network details with your friends or players whom you want to connect with.

Step 3: Join the Hamachi Network:

Instruct your friends or players to download and install Hamachi on their respective computers. Once installed, they should log in with their LogMeIn IDs or create new accounts. Instruct them to click on the "Network" menu and select "Join an existing network." They should enter the network name and password that you provided.

Step 4: Configure Network Settings:

Once all players have joined the Hamachi network, it's time to configure the network settings. Each player should right-click on the network name in the Hamachi window and select "Properties." Under the "Options" tab, ensure that the "Mesh" option is selected. This allows all players in the network to connect directly with one another. Make note of each player's Hamachi IP address, as this will be used to connect to their Minecraft server.

Step 5: Launch the Minecraft Server:

On the computer that will host the Minecraft server, launch the Minecraft server software. Configure the server settings according to your preferences, such as game mode, world settings, and player limits. Note that the server must be set to allow connections from players outside of your local network. Consult the Minecraft server documentation or online resources for guidance on how to modify these settings.

Step 6: Connect to the Minecraft Server:

On each player's computer, launch the Minecraft game client. In the multiplayer menu, click on "Add Server" and enter a name for the server. In the server address field, enter the Hamachi IP address of the player hosting the server. Click "Done" to save the server details. Players can now connect to the Minecraft server using the Hamachi network.

Step 7: Enjoy Multiplayer Minecraft:

With the virtual LAN set up using Hamachi, you and your friends can now enjoy multiplayer Minecraft sessions regardless of your physical location. Explore, build, and survive together as if you were on the same local network. Communicate using in-game chat or voice communication tools to enhance your collaborative gaming experience.
